Viola : Deirdre Dowling
Australian violist Deirdre Dowling holds an Honours degree in Music from the University of Melbourne. In 2001 she was awarded grants from the Australia Council for the Arts and the Ian Potter Trust to undertake post-graduate studies specialising in baroque and classical viola in the Netherlands. Her professors at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague, were Enrico Gatti and Elizabeth Wallfisch. After attaining a Masters degree, she moved to Paris and has been based in France ever since.
Deirdre is a member of Les Arts Florissants (Christie) and Les Musiciens du Louvre (Minkowski) in France, she regularly performs in Holland with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century (Bruggen) and the Netherlands Bach Society, and is frequently invited as guest principal viola with La Scintilla (Zurich Opera House) and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Koopman). With these orchestras she has toured extensively throughout Europe, the United States, Asia, Africa and South America, participated in numerous CD recordings and performed in many of the great concert halls and festivals across the world.
Deirdre returns regularly to Australia and enjoys playing with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera and as a soloist and chamber musician in various festivals throughout the country.
